What happens when mealworms eat food? This is a two day lab. In day one we measured the mass of the mealworms and the food. In day two we measured the mass of the food, the mealworms, and the mealworm waste.
It turns out, some matter from the food went into the atmosphere. In our next lab we will try to figure out what is going on with this "missing" matter. |

How do mealworms lose weight? In this lab we place mealworms into a container with BTB and cobalt chloride. Over the course of one day, the mealworms lose mass. Matter from the mealworms moves into the atmosphere.
BTB and cobalt chloride are chemical indicators that tell us about the change in matter in the atmosphere. |
Banana LabIn this lab we are looking at how the amount of starch in a banana changes as the banana ripens. Using iodine, the start granules in the banana turn black and can be viewed under the microscope.
The amount of starch also correlates to the firmness of the banana as starch is a major component of plant cell structure. Starch can be broken down into sugars, which taste sweet. So, as the starch is broken down into sugar we expect the taste of the banana to become sweeter. |
