Cell Labs

Cell Membranes - Bubble Lab

Cell membranes are made of phospholipids arranged into two layers. The cell membrane characteristic are very similar to the characteristics of bubbles because both are made from the similar phospholipid molecules.

Watch this video to see some of the characteristics of the cell membrane.

Osmosis in Elodea

Elodea is an aquatic plant with very thin leaves. This allows us to view the individual leaf cells under a microscope simply by placing a leaf onto a slide.

Elodea are fresh water plants. By adding salt water to the slide you can see how the cells respond to various concentrations of salt.

Food Tests

Indicators are chemicals that tell you if there is a specific molecule or type of molecule present in a sample. We will be using four indicators to test for different biomolecules.
  • Benedicts solution tests for simple sugars
  • Iodine tests for starch or complex sugars
  • Sudan III or IV tests for fats/lipids
  • Biurets tests for proteins

Analyzing a Nutrition Label

Nutrition labels provide infomation about the energy and molecules found in cells. Because all food is made from cells the molecules that are in cells are the same molecules that are in food.

By performing some simple calculations you can determine the percentage of the food that is from protein, carbohydrates, and fats/lipids.

Banana Lab

In this lab we are looking at how the amount of starch in a banana changes as the banana ripens. Using iodine, the start granules in the banana turn black and can be viewed under the microscope.

The amount of starch also correlates to the firmness of the banana as starch is a major component of plant cell structure. Starch can be broken down into sugars, which taste sweet. So, as the starch is broken down into sugar we expect the taste of the banana to become sweeter.
